Towards the end of the interview, I mentioned that, for me, www.NFB.ca has always been informative and an enjoyable site…not only for cross-cultural inspiration, but for historical insights as well. They are also on the cutting edge of making their content accessible in a variety of ways; their iPhone application was released this past Tuesday, and in their announcement they made specific note of 4 films on racism. In somewhat related news, and before reading the NFB’s announcement, I just happened to post a comment on a recent Womanist Musings post on the invisibility of Black women in Historica Canada film shorts.
Two seemingly unrelated online events became connected.
“There’s been a black community in Nova Scotia for over 300 years, but you wouldn’t know it from the history books” — a powerful statement from Speak It! From the Heart of Black Nova Scotia, a 1992 documentary (below).
I think I may have to hunt around online … I wonder where they are now? I wonder if Director Sylvia Hamilton considered a follow-up …would she make the same documentary today, 17 years later?
