International Women’s Day

Thousands of events will take place all over the world on Sunday March 8, International Women’s Day (March 8 being globally recognized since 1913).

Over the years, the day has grown to encompass large-scale events to not only honour women’s advancement, but to remind us all of the “action required to ensure that women’s equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life.”

Participating countries tend to designate a theme to the day; for this year, the United Nations has chosen its theme as “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls.”  In Canada, the federal government has chosen its them as “Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality.”

As I’m writing this, I’ve found that there are over 900 IWD events happening all over the world, with almost 130 events in Canada alone.

The official International Women’s Day website is extremely robust with features, content, video, links, even a Twitter feed  (Reuters_Women 2009 IWD) — tons of information.  You can check out the official site by clicking here.
